about

From the EP The What!? Remixes
Written 2008

Dedicated to the Memory of Benjamin Forrester. The working title was Switch. Because it was written with Jeff on guitar, myself on bass, and Michael Homan on drums. Then we switched back and tried to learn each other's parts. Jeff wrote it in the style of his dad's writing plus Led Zepplin, then I added the requisite prog and Van Halen bullshit I always do. Jeff and I had both accidentally written lyrics for the song and were eager to show each other. We both were missing EXACTLY HALF OF THE LYRICS. Smashed them together. Hard to believe. This was the first original song the audience ever sang back to us. It has always held a very special place in my heart, especially, now that Ben has passed. We played an acoustic version at his funeral.

lyrics

Lyrics by Derrick Faith and Jeff Forrester

I opened up your door
As silently you prayed
Tried to switch it on
But you stood in the dark
To prey for the better daze

Look up towards the sky
It never stays the same
Until you come to find
People, always change

They say that you should give out
More than you take
But I know it's not the same
Here's to the knife in your side
For those you lost with your pride
Can never be replaced
The lines you cannot trace
Will you ever leave the shame
Or switch it on again and again

Switch it up and shut it down!
In the house that bears your name
Never gonna live it down!
Until you come to find life's a
Series of changing lanes

Hold on to the things you trust
Sometimes win, sometimes lose
When in time it turns to dust
People, distant, always find the clues

Saying you should give out more than you take
But I know it's not the same
Drink to that knife in your said
For all those songs you let die!
They'll never be the same
The lines you cannot trace
Will you ever leave the shame

Or switch it on again and again

I opened up your door
As quietly you laid
Tried to step aside but
You stood in my path and said
"Baby don't be afraid"
Look up towards the sky
It never stays the same
One day you will find
PEOPLE. ALWAYS. CHANGE

Saying you should give out more than you take
I know it's not the same
Dance with a knife in your side
You're just along for the ride

You'll never be the same
The lines you cannot trace
Will you ever leave the shame
Or,
Switch it on again and again
