about

The final track from the unreleased album City of Rain
Written 2013
Working Title: Mega Death

This song was written as a response to watching many close and emotionally vulnerable friends be taken advantage by the vultures that feed off such unfortunate tragedies. Some lines are specifically about how much pleading me and some of the other guys did with this people, only to sadly watch their world, physical, and mental health deteriorate. Pretty serious stuff. Now let's take a sharp turn for a second and discuss the funniest moment of the entire history of Two Sly Deuce:

We were practicing at Larry's house. It was me, Jeff, Matt, and Tom. Right before we started playing the song, I rapidly detuned my strings just enough to be horrendous. Matt caught me, and did the same. But only on the low E, so he was out only part of the time. Every like 8th bar, I would do this really stupid quarter step bending that sounded all moan-y and stupid. Tom starts kind of looking around and Jeff is practically squinting through his cymbals to figure out what the fuck is happening. I can't breathe and I can't even open my eyes I'm laughing so hard. Tom catches me laughing and shakes his had and starts playing like a march or some dumb shit. Matt yells "LIKE VULTURES" in the Tiniest, wimpiest falsetto. That's when I noticed. Larry had been recording the song. He lowered the camcorder and just says "guys...something don't sound right." The song just fell apart from there. Larry used to jam some classic rock songs with us (Sunshine of Your Love, American Woman, etc). He would sometimes pop in and say "do you have anything I can strum along to." (or he would request Hey Bulldog, a beatles song that we DON'T KNOW LARRY." Usually this was during Vultures, which is a 6 minutes riff based prog song in 6/4. Well, one day I said yes. And wrote him out the chords to the very end. The finale. After a few cycles with me and Matt, Jeff sat down, and Tom sat down and we rocked it. Larry was always supportive. Matt and I got close with him. We had intended that when we recorded the album, he would play acoustic guitar on the end. Sadly, we never got the chance. We started the song live with "do you have anything I can strum along to".

I was 18 years old, about a month a way from 19 when this band started. Sitting here typing this, I'm almost 31. I don't know if anyone has any interest in something like this for a local prog band that didn't play over 100 shows. Though we did have dozens and dozens of people come to our practices over the years. Truth is, I'm doing this for me. I'm happy to be able to sit down and look at 9 years of my life. I'm glad I took and kept such detailed notes on everything. There are still songs out there, and video footage. I would love to get a copy of our first show (MY GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME DELETED IT) and certain songs I plan on reworking and releasing at some point. We recorded several things that were lost, deleted (sometimes vengefully by former members). I have rehearsals with from Sarah's time in the band. I have studio footage. I would live to one day put it up on youtube. Just to have. The one thing missing from this set is a full version of "The Rift", our 16 minute Epic. I'll see what I can do about that. Until next time. I love you all. Thanks for coming out. And in reflection of the lyrics to Vultures

"...stunned silence, reflecting what's left to be said..."

lyrics

Lyrics by Derrick Faith

You misplace your
Trust in others
Worship one and
Bait the other
Refuse to take my
Good advice
And find yourself swarmed
Fight or flight

Exonerated from the
Information
Left vulnerable to disease

Don't cry
Accept
Don't try
Do it

Watching high from a perch
Of a missed perception
Hindsight 20/20
In the wrong direction

Too wrong
To right
Two paths
To deny

You Peck and you pry
On her insecurities
Like vultures
Raping the dead
You con your way
Into her Leggings

Hand in hand you
Circumstances
Guns for hire
Wash the stains from
Undeserving
Inhibitions
Quite unnerving

Betraying light for dark
Relay the conversation
(Watch from the skys like a hawk on a mouse)
Communication wrong
Delay your resignation
(We're going weapons hot, shut your mouth )

You Peck and you pry
On her insecurities
Like vultures
Raping the dead
You conned your way
Into her Leggings

The finale had already
Come and gone
To bury all your fears
Inside that book

You never
Keep your promises
How do you sleep?
Without a dream

The tossing and the turning
And never learning the
Tough lessons,you try so hard
To look away

From their instinctive reactions
Distractions, a glance; and
NEVER LOOK BACK AGAIN

Stunned silence
Reflecting what's left
To be said
